A businessman cum adventurer, Alfred SCHAUFELBERGER, found himself in Bali in the mid fifties and became a close friend and confident of Galega II. He actually stayed in the Palace for a good while before moving to the Airport Hotel at the present compound of Ba Fohtung. He managed the Hotel until he was swindled by a European friend of his, Hans Briegger.

Schaufelberger himself came from an obscure origin. He never mentioned his family. Was never married though he flirted with many young Bali girls. He spoke a mixture of German/Swiss/English and eventually some Mungaka. He spent his last days running the Hill Top Motel not far from Safari Lodge and earned the title of Nkom Nfon.

Popularly known in Bali as  SOFA a short  for SOFABEGA (since in Bali the letters R and L are out of place) he died in abject poverty from an infection that putrified after removing jiggers from his feet.
